So, Is Coffee Good for You, Bad for You, Or Does Anyone Really Know?
It seems there are always stories in the media about the effects of coffee and caffeine. Some tell of challenges to your health, others boast about how healthy it can be for your mind, preventing early onset Alzheimer’s, or improving memory. Some say coffee is good for your heart, some say it’s bad. Sometimes I wonder if it isn’t who is paying for the study that determines what the results will be, or how those results are displayed in a positive or negative light?
Recently in the BBC Health News Online there was a troubling article about Coffee and Strokes on May 5, 2011. The article was titled; “Sex and Coffee Trigger Stroke” by James Gallagher a Health reporter from BBC News. In the teaser paragraph it stated: “Coffee, sex and blowing your nose could increase the risk of a type of stroke, say researchers in the Netherlands.” Of course, everyone is saying that despite this troubling evidence, additional studies will be needed to know for sure. Even the “Stroke Association said more research was needed.”
Well, that’s interesting news isn’t it now, but I doubt many of us are going to give up coffee, or sex for that matter. Nevertheless, I believe this proves my point. That is to say how can we trust such a study or research project? After all, for every one of these negative research papers about Coffee, I can find you several more that put caffeine and coffee consumption in a positive light as long as it’s done in moderation. And for someone to say that sex is bad for your health, I’d like to remind you that if your parents never had sex, you wouldn’t be here, and we wouldn’t be discussing this anyway.
Perhaps we should take these research papers with a grain of salt and realize that some things are good for us and some things are not, but most everything in moderation probably will not kill you. It’s better to go through life happy, and with a positive attitude than to deprive yourself of the things that you enjoy. If you drink a cup of coffee a day chances are you will be fine. After all, there are many centenarians, those people who are now over 100-years old who drink coffee every single day and have since they were in their 20s.
