What is so satisfying to people about a well-organised environment? Why do so many individuals spend a lot of their free time reading through blogs that show the best way to colour-code a filing cabinet or rearrange a closet?

A study conducted by Nicole R. Keith, Ph.D., an Indiana University research scientist and associate professor, found that individuals who have clean homes are healthier than those with messy ones. Keith and her colleagues monitored the physical health of 998 49-65-year-old African Americans. This demographic is known for having a higher risk of heart disease. Study participants who kept their houses clean were more active and healthier than those who did not. Home cleanliness, in fact, was more of a predictor of good physical health than the neighbourhood’s walkability.
Why is it so hard to stay organised?

The problem is throughout life, you have a tendency to pick up many large and small objects that you don’t necessarily need to have. For example, you may have a bag of fertiliser in your shed from the time when you were planning on starting a garden. You could have a waffle iron sitting on the kitchen counter that is never used or a bunch of old birthday cards laying around. These items take up valuable space that you could use better for other items that are more necessary.
The solution to this problem is to get rid of the clutter. This can be hard to do, especially when you feel emotionally attached to old items. Do your best to throw away or donate your clutter. If you find it hard to let go of certain items, take photos of them so you can remember them. You could also find a new place to store certain items to better organise your house.
2. You are short on time
The problem is that it can be very time-consuming to get even just one room organised. When faced with the reality of needing to organise your whole house, you could be inclined to give up before you even get started. How can you keep up with your job, your family, or even have time for hobbies when all f your valuable time is spent on cleaning? Unfortunately, when you have a disorganised house, you are much less efficient, and so you end up with even less free time to enjoy yourself. It can turn into a vicious cycle that never seems to end.
Like with any major project, the solution is to take it one step at a time. Devote 30 minutes per day on organisation and cleaning. If you don’t have enough time to do that, try sending 15 minutes instead, or even 10 minutes.
3. You tend to forget how good it feels to be organised.
